Beyond Documentary

Artist Statement

Beyond Documentary is non-linear multimedia ‘photo documentary’ incorporating a combination of text, still photographs, video clips, audio, and graphics. This means that rather than having a text version of a story accompanied by still photographs, various parts of a story are told using different media. The Knight Digital Media Centre at Berkeley calls it multimedia journalism, and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard calls it Photo Documentary. I call it: Beyond Documentary.

The work utilises collaboration with subjects with the aim to hand over some control to those being photographed.  Nikki and Annie learnt how to make photos and contributed to the editing of their story.

Beyond documentary photography: An Investigation into the benefits of collaborative multi media story telling techniques.

Masters in Design Research project. To design a multi media participatory photographic documentary exhibition with two teenage girls Niki and Annie from South Auckland, New Zealand. This work will be exhibited during the Manukau Festival of the Arts, as, online, street posters, and on LCD screens. This project aims to go beyond the boundaries of conventional documentary distribution. Beyond Documentary tests non-traditional methods of not only the record of the photographic documentary story, with the intention to celebrate access to digital technology and distribute the stories, made by the youth, into the community rather than confined to galleries, magazines and cinema.
